Masataka Taketsuru, and his Scottish wife Rita, Taketsuru Pure Malt 2020 is a blend of single malts from the brand's two distilleries; Yoichi founded in 1934 in the northern part of the archipelago on the island of Hokkaido, and Miyagikyo built in 1973 west of the city of Sendai on the main island of Honshu.

From this marriage is born a whisky that is intensely fruity, floral, and spicy, with a slightly peaty and salty character. On the nose, it reveals itself as indulgent with fruity notes of citrus (lemon, grapefruit) but also notes of coconut, chocolate, and a very subtle peat. It is on the palate that the peat will gradually develop while leaving ample room for fruity notes of apple and pear, as well as vegetal notes of white flowers (lily, lilac) and freshly cut hay. This harmonious taste profile extends into a long, honeyed, and spicy finish during which the peat gently dissipates.

For this new creation, the Chief Blender of Nikka has blended a majority of single malts aged in sherry casks and some "remade casks" which are Bourbon casks with some of the damaged staves replaced by new ones.
